To join the groups Dr. Annarita Patrizi and Dr. Daniela Mauceri. The successful candidate will investigate the role of the choroid plexus, a specialized endothelial-epithelial tissue, in mediating the brain-body interactions in pathologies. The project is embedded within the ERA-NET Neuron ChorNEXUS project and includes in vivo experiments in which mouse models of acute and chronic pain are employed. The project relies on an integrative approach that combines behavioral, molecular, genetic, and biochemical methods with imaging techniques.

Skills/Qualifications

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Neuroscience or related areas, should be highly motivated, with strong organization skills and attention to detail, propensity to structure analytical steps in well-documented and reproducible workflows and towards independent work and planning. Candidates must be able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Fluency in English and the ability to work in an international environment is mandatory. Candidates with prior experience conducting experiments with animal models including certification for animal experimentation (FELASA) will have priority. Additional relevant skills include microscopy, immunohistochemistry, biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology.

The emerging ‘Synthetic Cell Programming’ lab, led by Dr. Santos-Moreno (santosmorenolab.org), is seeking for a highly-motivated postdoctoral researcher for engineering synthetic gene circuits to program time in E. coli cells. This position is funded by an ERC Starting Grant (project: TICK-TOCK Do and Die).

The successful candidate will work on designing and building synthetic gene circuits to program time in cells, and on characterizing these circuits, fine-tuning them, and connecting them to other circuits / actuator modules. The candidate is also expected to write articles, present results at seminars / conferences, contribute to the training of PhD candidates and undergraduate students, collaborate with other group members and labs, and apply for postdoc fellowships. One postdoctoral 3 year-contract (annual gross salary: 40.900 €) is available at the National Center for Biotechnology (CNB-CSIC) (PI: Juan García Arriaza) to work in the development of novel vaccine candidates against viruses with epidemic and pandemic potential. As a model system for the expression of genes of interest we use the modified vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA) strain, a member of the poxvirus family.

Project and job information: We have previously developed vaccine candidates against emerging viral diseases, such as chikungunya, zika, ebola and SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 based on the MVA vector expressing antigens from these viruses, which were highly immunogenic and effective in the control of virus infection in several animal models. We have received funding from the Horizon Europe Framework Programme (HORIZON) (call HORIZON-HLTH-2023-DISEASE-03) to generate novel vaccine candidates against viruses with epidemic and pandemic potential, as well as to study their immunogenicity and efficacy in animal models. The goal is to develop new vaccine candidates and vaccination strategies against viruses with epidemic and pandemic potential, in order to stablish the best-in-class immunogens that induces more potent levels of specific T and B-cell immune responses, and confer the highest level of protection and of durability. These findings will generate detailed insights into the immunological mechanisms necessary for vaccine efficacy, relevant to vaccination programs against emerging viruses, and will identify the most effective vectors that could move forward to clinical trials. The project is highly interdisciplinary and combines methods from virology, cell biology and immunology (i.e., virus generation, cell culture techniques, immunofluorescence, RT-qPCR, ELISA, flow cytometry, virus neutralization, etc.), as well as experimentation in mouse animal models.

Competences: Highly motivated researchers with strong interest and experience in vaccine development, virology and immunology. Motivated candidates with prior experience in recombinant virus generation, cell culture, molecular biology, immunology, BSL-3 laboratory skills, and mouse experimentation are especially encouraged to apply. A good knowledge of English and a Certificate in animal experimentation are highly desirable.

Institute of Neuroscience, Alicante (Spain)

We are looking for talented and motivated candidates with an interest in Neuroscience to investigate how juvenile plasticity shapes cognitive processing and adaptive emotional behaviors.
We have a strong interest on tackling how dysfunction of the underlying processes drive brain diseases—from schizophrenia or depression to demyelinating disorders, and devising strategies to harness them for therapeutics.

The specific projects will focus on: 1) synapse-level regulation of mRNA translation by novel multiprotein complexes during cognitive tasks and stress exposure; 2) roles of non-conventional glutamate receptors in neural circuits that mediate emotional and social adaptation. Tools will involve a variety of genetically-modified mice, 3D-reconstruction of circuits and connections, activity manipulations and RiboTrap/RNAseq analysis (Nature Rev Neuroscience, 17, 623, 2016; Nature Medicine, 19, 1030, 2013; eLife e71575, 2021; Cell Reports 30, 112477, 2023). Applicants should have a PhD in Neuroscience or related discipline, and a solid background in biochemistry/cell biology, mRNA biology, imaging methods, or mouse genetics/Crispr techniques. The Cava lab, situated at the Laboratory of Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) and the Department of Molecular Biology (Umeå University), is a dynamic research environment focused on exploring bacterial cell wall biology and genetics. Our research spans the intersection of basic and clinical investigations.

Our findings have revealed that numerous bacteria modify the chemistry of their cell walls, leading to significant impacts on both innate and adaptive immune responses in the intestine. In this project, our objective is to delve into the biological significance of cell wall chemical remodelling within the context of metabolic interactions between the microbiota and the host. Specifically, we aim to understand how these interactions may contribute to the development of chronic inflammatory disorders of the intestine.

Qualifications
Candidate must hold a university degree in Molecular Biology, Cancer Biology, Immunology or Microbiology equivalent to a European University PhD at the time of recruitment. You should be highly motivated, have very good communication skills and the ability to interact in a team. You must have a good working knowledge of standard molecular biology, microbiology, and immunology techniques. The cells that sustain a cancer and that are largely responsible for metastatic and aggressive disease are termed cancer stem cells. They are not eliminated by conventional treatments because chemotherapeutics and radiotherapy target dividing cells and cancer stem cells are quiescent.  Cancer stem cells, therefore, provide a source of cells that replenish a cancer post-treatment leading to disease relapse. The many endeavours to find a means to eliminate cancer stem cells might provide a bona fide cure for some cancers. Activity of the retinoic acid receptor g (for the active metabolite of vitamin A) is important to cancer stem cell survival and proliferation. We have developed a synthetic compound that switches off the activity of this receptor. It kills cancer stem cells without affecting normal cells.

This project will study why the cancer stem cells die whereas normal cells are unaffected. This is important to developing the compound for use to treat patients. The project will use prostate cancer cell lines as model system and untransformed prostate epithelial cells as control. To investigate how retinoic acid receptor g regulates gene expression at DNA promoters and enhancers, we will perform genome wide sequencing techniques, such as RNA-seq, ChIP-seq and chromatin accessibility by DNase1-sequencing. The researcher will be trained in molecular biology techniques, including the genome wide techniques, and their analysis.

At the time of recruitment, the researcher must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity in the country of the beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to recruitment under the project.
